Summer Watering Restrictions

Why Watering Restrictions Are Important In Orion Township

Our water system is a shared responsibility between Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA), Orion Township, and its residents and business owners.  During the summer months, with increased water usage, a demand for the water system occurs.  Watering restrictions have been put in place to help spread the demand on the water system, which in turn helps with our water rates.

Water rates are set by GLWA and take several factors into consideration. One of the most significant factors involves the total consumption of our system and when that demand happens. Simply put, what days of the week are we drawing more water from GLWA, and when that demand happens, what are called peak demand hours and non-peak hours?

With this knowledge, Orion Township constructed a water tower in 2009, anticipating that filling the water storage tank during the day would save money. The peak demand hours are early morning, when people are getting ready for work or school (when in session), and again in the evening, when people return to their homes. Non-peak hours are from 12:00 a.m. (midnight) to 5:00 a.m.

Orion Township restricts the water flow from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. from our main connection from GLWA and utilizes water from the water tower.  After 8:00 a.m., normal operations resume, and the water tower begins filling. Come nighttime, water pressure in the tower is at its highest, and this, combined with less water demand during the night hours, means we have our water to use for tasks requiring significant water amounts, such as automatic lawn watering.  By operating the water tower in this manner last year, Orion Township saved $600,000.00 in water rates, which were passed on to our customers.

Watering restrictions are not new to Orion Township, nor are they new to the 115 communities that are serviced by GLWA.    In 2009, the Board of Trustees adopted the Summer Lawn Watering Restrictions (Ordinance 68 Section 37), which has been in effect every year from the beginning of May until the end of September.   Over the years,  our customers have developed good outdoor water habits and we have had great cooperation in following the restrictions that have allowed us to run our system efficiently and keep our water rates significantly lower than our surrounding communities.

Please call the Department of Public Services at (248) 391-0304, extension 8500, if you have any questions about the watering restrictions.
